~posted by Christie At GDC Online in Austin last week, Steve and I met with the folks from Wargaming.net. We were treated to a detailed update on the progress of World of Tanks since its release, and after that conversation I was ready to play. Unfortunately, my (spoiled) son had convinced me to leave my laptop back in Florida with him so that he could play Minecraft while I was gone, and I wasn't able to get started till my return. My initial impression? Shazam! As you've heard on the show, I'm reluctant to try new games because of download times and space on my hard drive. First off, the download was remarkably quick, especially for a game of this complexity. I was prepared to remove Guild Wars from my computer if need be to be able to play WoT (please don't tell my friend Lisa) but it wasn't necessary. And even on the computer I sometimes call "Old Yeller" out of frustration, and with my lame DSL connection, the gameplay was great. Onto the actual in-game experience. First of all, 90 minutes passed in the blink of an eye. I had done a good bit of research on the tank clases and abilities before logging in; the "getting started" tutorial video is exceptional. My first goal was to enter a practice battleground. The other players were very friendly and mellow; of course the fact that I threw myself at their mercy by proclaiming my noob status probably helped in that regard. I can't tell you how much fun I had and how quickly I was able to catch onto not only the navigation functions but also the best part: blowing chunks off other tanks and then ramming them into submission. I won't claim to be a prodigy in WoT, but it was right up my dirt path. If only they would add skinning... I'll keep you updated on my journey through this game, and try to outsmart LibSyn's blog posting interface to include a link below to the initial tutorial video. For the Alliance! Category:Gaming
